Introduction

Employees are normally regulated by the employment contract. However, they are exposed to several other work-related issues such as issues of discrimination, privacy, air wages, working conditions, trade union and moral hazards as a result of the employees-employer relationship. Workplace ethics is the application of ethical values in a company’s decision-making process connected with the work environment, especially personnel. These decisions, resulting in right or wrong actions, directly affect the workplace. Workplace ethics means an extension of an individual’s ethical standards to the people at large at the workplace.

Definition Of Work Ethics

A professional manager says that, work ethics embraces responsibility, work conscience and ethical work conduct. If a person gets the satisfaction that he is contributing his best to his organization and is not merely earning his bread – this is the true implication of work ethics. Work ethics implies that pa person works for achieving the organizational objectives in totality.

Work  Ethics In Organization  : In Practice

At basic level : Work ethics relates to observing organizational discipline, includes timely reporting to duty, behaviour with dignity with all, to be available on duty at work time, working effectively on the job. The demand is for a strong work-oriented behaviour.

At higher level : Work ethics relates to commitment and accountability. Employees own up responsibilities to complete work at a scheduled time with high commitment to attain the defined goal/target.

At organizational level : Work ethics implies protecting the interest of the organization at all times. Avoiding public comments on the organization. Work ethics, therefore, refers to the strengths of one’s commitment and dedication to work hard at his applicable to all employees across the board.

The first three expectations are lower order expectations and the fourth one is a high order expectation. The fourth expectation is what every organization looks for in its employees. Organisations providing enabling work ambience/nurturing climate full of opportunities for challenges, growth and development are able to drive the fruits of high performance from its staff across the board. In such organizations, the focus is on performance and not just pay and promotion. Performance-linked reward system being in place, is fine-tuned to meet the staff expectations. High performance is the natural outcome. But the system is subject to regular review and correction as and when necessary to restrict deviations.

In the era of rapid globalization, managers have to face several ethical challenges. Some deal effectively with these challenges, while some find it difficult to do so. Despite all efforts to deal systematically with ethical issues, unethical conduct does occur at times in most organizations. Here are a few guidelines for managing ethics at the workplace :

  • Code of conduct and ethics: A company’s code sets forth the moral rules for its management and employees. Ethical code goes beyond the legal requirements. Ethics come into action where the law ends.
  • Opening the lines of communication : A company’s communication as regards ethics has to be two-way. An employee, as much as a boss, is likely to face a moral dilemma. The company’s atmosphere should permit the junior employee to discuss the morals of an action which fails in gray area.
  • Ethical decision in groups : Employees come from various backgrounds and have different point of view. As such, when they put the heads together a more sustainable ethical decision can be achieved.
  • Bring ethics management in tune with other types of management: When a company makes a statement of its values, it should mention the ethical values is desired. The management has to devise a structure of management principles based on its ethical values.
  • Including employees in ethical management: Employees from different sections need to come together in taking ethical decisions. They must feel that the ethical choices made are their own.
  • Creating atmosphere of trust : Considering the difficulties in face-to-face talk between the seniors and the subordinates a company may appoint a lawyer. etc, to listen to the employee who has tips to give .The company may also provide a tip box, though in actual practice in India these tip boxes are not used. Subordinates prefer to mumble and grumble instead of hitting the nail on the head.
  • Grievance Policy:  The company should have a policy to resolve disputes between subordinates and seniors systematically.




Code Of Ethics In Practices

Sometimes there is disconnection between the company’s code of ethics and the company’s actual practices. At. worst, this makes the policy duplications, and, at best, it is merely a marketing tool.

  • To be successful, most ethicists would suggest that a ethics policy should be:
  • Given the unequivocal support of top management, by both word and example.
  • Explained in writing and orally, with periodic reinforcement.
  • Monitored by top management, with routine inspections for compliance and improvement
  • Backed up by clearly stated consequences in the case of disobedience.
  • Remain neutral and nonsexist.
